About us

Smiths Pharmacy was started by Walter Smith in 1874 in downtown St. Helena. In 1898, Mr. Smith’s son-in-law, Walter Metzner, became proprietor and continued as pharmacist for many years.

Pam, Patty, Nellie
Nellie, Pam and Patty have a cumulative 71 years of employment with owners Jeff and Debbie. They are the backbone of our business! Patty is our Pharmacy Tech extraordinaire. She is fast, efficient, organized and our pharmacists’ right hand gal! Nellie has been with Jeff and Debbie, as an employee, since 1988. She is our OTC expert and is as reliable as they come! Pam is our pharmacy typist, and makes our days just ducky!

Elvia
Elvia has been an employee for 14 years and the Smiths store manager since 2005. Elvia’s multi-tasking skills include merchandise coordinator, bookkeeping, inventory, data management and employee relations. She is our HR, IT and buyer wrapped up in one!

Jeff and Debbie Hansen became the fifth and current owners in 1994. January 2006 the Hansen’s expanded their services to Calistoga with the acquisition of Silverado Pharmacy. Jeff manages the pharmacy department at both stores. He was born and raised in Sacramento California. He graduated from University of the Pacific, School of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1984. Jeff serves on the regional board for Compliant Pharmacy Alliance and is a member of National Community Pharmacists Association and California Pharmacists Association.

Debbie met Jeff at UOP while earning her teaching degree. She became part of the pharmacy business when they purchased Smiths in 1994. Debbie enjoys shopping the gift shows looking for unique and affordable gifts.

Jeff and Debbie pride themselves on maintaining a knowledgeable and consistent staff. Customers are usually greeted by name and can depend on efficient, professional service at every visit.

Besides the usual OTC sections of a drugstore, Smiths carries Nature’s Bounty vitamins, Burt’s Bees skincare, Futuro supports and braces, L’oreal and Wet n’ Wild Cosmetics, Tweezerman and Denco, Travel and hairgoods.

Pet Department
Our pet department offers a variety of products for your dog, cat, bird and small animals. Premium brands we stock include Wellness, Evangers, Canidae, Blue Buffalo and many more. Special orders for your favorite brand are always welcome. We have a large selection of toys, treats and practical items such as leashes, bowls and grooming supplies. The Smiths Pet Club invites you to join for a free gift and free food for your pet.

Toy
From simple marbles and crayons, to complex puzzles and classic games, we have something for the whole family. We have great toys for the next child’s birthday party, beautiful puzzles for young and old.

Gift
Smiths owner/buyer Debbie and store manager Elvia, travel to multiple trade shows to seek out our unique and affordable gifts and decorative accessories. Bath and Body, Party, Office Supplies, Greeting Cards, Toys, Cosmetics, Baby and Pet are the many departments Smiths provides to the Upper Napa Valley. Our seasonal offerings like Valentine chocolates and gifts, Easter basket stuffers, summer toys and footwear, fall décor, Halloween costumes and Christmas wrap, cards and novelties. We always have just the right gift for that next birthday or occasion.
